What’s Happening, November 17, 2018

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (On Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.)  “Fear Not!” is the November Sermon Series!  Recent events such as the Jewish Synagogue where eleven people were killed, the volatility of the stock market, racial tension, gun violence, religion intolerance, and political indifference are driving fear for many people.  People are fearful of never getting married, fearful of losing a job, of not being able to pay the mortgage.  We have fear of the unknown, fear of intimacy, and even fear of commitment.  One of the realities of this life is fear of things.  These are real concerns and fear seems reasonable to a person, even when it appears irrational.  But fear drives us away from God and reveals our desire to control the circumstances before us.  The number one command in the Bible is “Fear Not,” and it’s also a loving invitation to trust God.

BAPTISM  If you are interest in joining the church or in being baptized, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office at 61-271-2600 or mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.

CHANGE FOR RWANDA  McKendree Church is  sponsoring a United Methodist Pastor in Rwanda for a year.  Currently the United Methodist pastors in Rwanda do not receive an adequate salary to support their families.  It takes only $34 (U.S. money) a month to support a pastor in Rwanda.  We will be taking a change offering each Sunday.  Bring your change to create change!

ENCOUNTER MINISTRY    Our Encounter Ministry is an alternative service for those who feel “church” is not for them.  We meet at 12:30pm at the offices of the United Methodist Publishing House, at 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.  We are meeting on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month.  We invite you to join us and bring a neighbor, family or friends!  For more information on our Encounter Ministry, you may contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

NURSERY VOLUNTEERS  We are in need of nursery volunteers for the upcoming holiday season.  If you are willing to spend a Sunday morning in the nursery with our sweet babies and toddlers, please notify Emily Scott at mckendreeEmily@gmail.com or contact the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.  Thank you!

CHILDREN’S CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENT  There will be NO CHILDREN’S CHURCH OR CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL on Sunday, November 25 (Thanksgiving weekend).  The Nursery will be open for children age 5 and under.

JOHN WESLEY GOES TO THE MOVIES  10 am Sunday mornings in October and November, Community Room (near garage entrance).  “John Wesley Goes to the Movies” examines the relationships between faith and film, scripture and script, theology and theatre.  So far we’ve talked about Groundhog Day, Hidden Figures and Get Out.  We are very excited to discuss St. Vincent this Sunday, November 18.  Join us at 10 am!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADULT BIBLE STUDY   On November 21 our Wednesday Night group will begin an Advent study taken from the book, A Christmas Carol.  To reacquaint ourselves with this story, we will gather in Pastor Stephen’s office this Sunday, November 18 at 1pm to watch the movie A Christmas Carol.  This Advent study will be for 5 weeks, November 21-December 19.  If you’d like to join our group for this short study, please contact Ruth Baggett at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.  We’d love to have you!

MEN’S CLOTHING NEEDED FOR CLOTHES CLOSET!   It feels like winter has come early – and our displaced men and women are in great need of warmer clothing.  We especially need warm clothing for men.  Sweat shirts/pants, flannel shirts, jeans, jackets and shoes will be greatly appreciated! Blankets, coats, hats and gloves are also greatly needed.  Donations may be brought to the church on Sundays or to the church office during the week.

CHRISTMAS EVE MEAL  Yes, we do plan that the kitchen will be completed!  We will have our traditional Christmas Eve meal for the downtown displaced community on Monday, December 24.  The meal will be served at 11:30am.  We’ll be needing food and funds donated to prepare our meal for about 300 guests.  More information will be coming soon!

Sunday, December 16 – Children’s Christmas Program and Confirmand Celebration

Monday, December 24 – Christmas Eve Meal for the Downtown Displaced Community, 11:30

PRAYER WALL  Our prayer wall is located on the table at the back of the church.  You may take a tag (in a box on the table), write out your prayer need, and place it on a nail in the wall.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Lead Team and Prayer Team pray over all the concerns submitted.  We welcome people from our congregation to submit concerns and to read and pray over the concerns of our church body.  You may also share your concerns with the church staff by phone (615-271-2600) or email (mckendreeinfo@gmail.com).

KITCHEN UPDATE!  THE END IS IN SIGHT!  After many months, we are now in the final stages of completing the kitchen renovation.  The hood and duct work are all in; the system has been turned on and it is UP AND WORKING!  The next item on our list is having the new floor put it.  It will be a poured concrete floor and will take 4-5 days to complete.  We anticipate our new equipment to arrive the first week of December.  This has been a long process but when you see the new kitchen and storage areas, you will agree it has been worth it.  WATCH FOR NEWS OF A CELEBRATION WHEN THE WORK IS COMPLETED!

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER  Remember that we as a church are praying the Lord’s Prayer every day at Noon.  Wherever you are at noon, we invite you to join us in prayer.
