Greetings Holy, Healthy and Happy People of God,
As I write this eNote to our faithful and devoted community of radical followers of Jesus Christ, I am attending the 2016 General Conference with over 850 delegates from around the world. One of the gatherings involved attending the Africa University reception as they celebrated 24 years. Africa University’s vision is that they aspire to become a world class university for leadership development in Africa.
In 1980, Bishop Arthur Kulah of Liberia and Bishop Emilio J. M. de Carvalho of Angola took the lead in advocating for “a university for all of Africa.” Their efforts generated a positive response within the United Methodist Church worldwide and in 1985 the “Africa Initiative” was born. And in 1987, The United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe donated 1,542 acres of land in the Nyagambu River Valley, across the road from the Old Mutare UMC Mission Centre, as the University site.
Located just outside the eastern highlands city of Mutare in Zimbabwe, Africa University is a private, international higher education institution founded in March 1992 by the United Methodist Church worldwide. The University welcomes students from all the nations of Africa without regard for race, class, ethnicity and political or religious affiliation.
Known as God’s Project, Africa University is the only private, United Methodist University in Zimbabwe. Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”
is the reality for Africa University.
At Africa University, undergraduate and graduate programs as well as short courses are offered in areas such as agriculture, business and public administration, education, health sciences, the humanities and social sciences, peace, leadership and governance and theology. The University’s total full-time enrollment is 1,500 students each year with over 5,600 alumni and a graduating rate of 92%. We thank God for giving the United Methodist Church Africa University.
Hear the W.O.W., the Words of Wisdom: “With God all things are possible!”
As always, remember, God’s will for us is good, we must do the rest!
