What’s Happening: January 13, 2017

MINISTRY AT McKENDREE!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES are regularly at 9am and 11am (On January 29th we will have one worship service at 10am.)  Our January sermon series is entitled “Draw Circles around God’s Promises!”  Every year we start with a set of goals we believe would make us better than the year before.  However midway through January, there are many distractions and missteps, and our lack of discipline prevents us from achieving our well-intended goals.

This year, let’s try a different method.  It involves the spiritual discipline of prayer.  Before starting any goals, let’s seek God’s direction first.  After seeking God, ask God to lead us to draw a circle around it with prayer.  And finally, expect the prayer to be answered through the form of a miracle.  In January, pray to God to give you big dreams that only He can help you accomplish.

ENCOUNTER MINISTRIES
ENCOUNTER@METROCENTER
Each Sunday at 12:30pm, McKendree Church has an alternative worship service for those who feel “church” isn’t for them.  This service meets at the United Methodist Publishing House, 2222 Rosa Parks Blvd. in Metro Center.

ENCOUNTER@EDGEHILL The Encounter@Edgehill meets the first Sunday of each month at 4:30pm (new time) at Edgehill Café, 1201 Villa Place.  In risky, vulnerable small group conversations around tables we seek to confront issues of privilege, racism, and classism that divide us, and to hear the call to God’s beloved community.

Everyone is welcome to attend one or both of our Encounter services.  For more information on either of our Encounter Ministries, you may contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering.  We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm.  This short time of worship includes prayers, hymns, a message and Holy Communion.  Everyone is invited to attend.

BAPTISMS  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.

McKENDREE GROUPS AND EVENTS

SPECIAL FILM SCREENING  McKendree UMC and the Encounter communities are partnering with other area churches to host a special screening and discussion of the documentary “13th” which deals with the legacy of racism in the U.S. and its impact on mass incarceration.  This will be held at the headquarters of the United Methodist Publishing House, 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd. on Monday, January 16, from 1:30-5:00.  Because of the themes of the film and some adult language, we recommend this for viewers 16 years old and up.  Seating is limited so please RSVP to Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.  We could also use volunteers who could help with set up, hospitality, and clean up.  If you’re available, contact Rick at the same email.

LIFE GROUPS  We invite and encourage everyone to be a part of a Life Group!  We have Life Groups for men, women, mixed adults.  Some groups meet at McKendree Church, others meet in coffee shops or homes in the Nashville area.  Contact Rick Quinn (mckendreerick@gmail.com) for more information on our McKendree Life Groups!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY  Our Adult Bible Study meets at 6pm in the Pastor’s office.  We are currently in a study of Christianity, Cults and Religions by Paul Carden.   The study on January 18th will be on Mormonism.  We will go over some of their history and teaching along with Scriptural teaching.  Later in the month we will focus on Eastern Spirituality (Hinduism, Buddhism, and the New Age) and in February we will study the teachings of Islam.  Everyone is welcome to join us!

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN  The UMW will meet Saturday, January 14th, at 10am in the Archives Room (Room 209).  We will plan and schedule meetings and other important dates for the year and set our 2017 budget.  We will start the new year off with an opening devotion and prayer and then do the scheduling.  Please attend and offer your suggestions for programs, projects, etc.  We need everyone’s ideas and prayers!

SCOUT APPRECIATION BREAKFAST, JANUARY 29!  Our Boy Scout Troop 219 want to say thanks and show their appreciation for the support of the McKendree Church family.  They are doing this by inviting you to BREAKFAST AT 9am SUNDAY, JANUARY 29.  This is NOT a fundraiser; there is no cost to youEveryone is invited!
