Wise counsel is difficult to come by. So many options to consider. However God puts wise people in our lives to help us discern. Wise people don’t have to be old, but experience does count for something. God hasn’t spoken in some time, but now God speaks. Are we listening? How do we listen? What prevents us from listening?
Hannah and Elkanah have given birth to Samuel, a promise from God. And Hannah quickly handed the gift of the baby back over to God. Now we find Eli raising the boy. Then one evening God speaks and Samuel has no idea what to do.
When God speaks…

The Lord called to Samuel. “I’m here,” he said. Samuel hurried to Eli and said, “I’m here. You called me?” 1 Samuel 3:4
God will speak again!
A third time the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “I’m here. You called me?” So Eli said to Samuel, “Go and lie down. If he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.’” 1 Samuel 3:8-9
Just listen!
So Samuel went and lay down where he’d been. Then the Lord came and stood there, calling just as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel said, “Speak. Your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10
