PEACE: A NIGHT OF WORSHIP
Wednesday, May 16 at 7 pm
McKendree Chapel

Join us for a night of worship through music and prayer with Eric Coomer
and the McKendree Worship Band!  The focus of our first night of worship is peace –
peace in our city, our country and in our world.  We encourage you to invite your friends
and family to this exciting worship experience!

McKENDREE MINISTRIES!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (On Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.)  Our May sermon series is “Grace is Enough!”  Often we think what we need is out there to be acquired and purchased.  We don’t normally think about grace as something we see, but rather something that just is.  Paul writes to explain grace in this way, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect (enough) in weakness.  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9  We will explore the dimensions of grace through the Wesleyan lens of prevenient, justifying and sanctifying grace.  Let’s walk through grace as an experience of God’s gift to us daily and extend it to others on our discipleship path.

BAPTISM  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.

ENCOUNTER MINISTRY  Our Encounter Ministry will not be meeting this Sunday, but we invite you to join us next Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm at the offices of the United Methodist Publishing House at 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd, for our Encounter service.  The Encounter is an alternative service for those who feel “church” is not for them.  We are disrupting the passive model of Christian gathering and building bridges of hope around tables where we encounter God in and with our neighbor and engage the neighborhood.  For more information on our Encounter Ministry, you may contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering.  We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm.  Our worship includes prayers, music, a message and Holy Communion.  Everyone is invited to attend.

WEAR FIRE COLORS FOR PENTECOST – Remember to wear red, yellow, and/or orange on Sunday, May 20 as we celebrate the fire of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY  We are in a study of the book The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  This is a classic work of religious satire, written from the perspective of Screwtape, one of Satan’s highly placed assistants, as he mentors his nephew Wormwood in the ways of demonhood.  We are finding this book to be humorous and enlightening and it pushes us to think from a different perspective.  We will not be meeting on May 16.  On May 23, we will discuss Letters 21-22, on Entitlement and The Christian Life.  We welcome everyone to join with us for this study series.  We meet each Wednesday at 6pm in Pastor Stephen’s office.

SIGN LANGUAGE CLASS   Our sign language class has begun!  This next Monday, May 14, will be the last for new people to join the class.  We meet each Monday at 6:15pm in Pastor Stephen’s office.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office at 615-271-2600 or mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE!

BUENA VISTA ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FATHERHOOD FRIDAY, MAY 11TH

Our Pencil Partner School, Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School is inviting male adults from the school’s community and partners to help them celebrate Fatherhood Friday on Friday, May 11th.  Volunteers will gather in the Buena Vista library from 7:15am-8am to eat breakfast and spend time with young scholars.  This is a great opportunity for male mentoring and relationship building.  Additionally, there will be a portion of the time dedicated to reading as we continue to stress the importance of literacy with our Buena Vista students.  If you are interested in this one time volunteer opportunity, contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

CLOTHING CLOSET ORGANIZATION  We are in great need of persons to help organize clothing in our church clothes closet.  We have been gifted with a large donation of clothes, but they must be sorted, folded and organized before we can re-open the closet to the public.  If you can assist for a morning, an afternoon, an evening, a couple of hours, whatever fits your schedule – we truly need help!   Please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office if you can donate some time (mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600).

CREATION CARE MINISTRY  On Saturday, May 12th, McKendree Church will co-sponsor in Creation Care Recycling Day at West End UMC, from 9am-12pm.  This will be an opportunity for:
Document shredding – bring paper and photos in an untied garbage bag or open box
Electronic recycling – computers, monitors, DVD players, electronics, printers, televisions and more.  There is a $10 charge for CRT monitors and a $25 charge for all televisions.
Batteries – dry-cell batteries, disposable and rechargeable and others
Medications – dispose of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, pills, liquids, inhalers
Donations for Goodwill – clothing, household items, furniture, books, working appliances

As a co-sponsor, we need volunteers to help at West End UMC on May 12.  Volunteers will direct cars through the parking lot and help unload items from people’s cars/trucks.  We need to fill 3 slots from 8:30-12:15.  You can volunteer for all 4 hours, or for 2-hour shifts (8:30-10:40/10:30-12:15).  If you have questions or can help on May 12, please contact Karasheila Jackson at krochellenoskcaj@gmail.com.  Thanks for your help!
