MINISTRY AT McKENDREE!
SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES are regularly at 9am and 11am (On Fifth Sundays we will have one worship service at 10am.) Our January sermon series is entitled “Draw Circles Around God’s Promises!” Every year we start with a set of goals we believe would make us better than the year before. However midway through January, there are many distractions and missteps, and our lack of discipline prevents us from achieving our well-intended goals.
This year, let’s try a different method. It involves the spiritual discipline of prayer. Before starting any goals, let’s seek God’s direction first. After seeking God, ask God to lead us to draw a circle around it with prayer. And finally, expect the prayer to be answered through the form of a miracle. In January, pray to God to give you big dreams that only He can help you accomplish.
ENCOUNTER@METROCENTER Each Sunday at 12:30pm, McKendree Church has an alternative worship service for those who feel “church” isn’t for them. This service meets at the United Methodist Publishing House, 2222 Rosa Parks Blvd. in Metro Center.
ENCOUNTER@EDGEHILL The Encounter@Edgehill meets the first Sunday of each month at 4:30pm (new time) at Edgehill Café, 1201 Villa Place. In risky, vulnerable small group conversations around tables we seek to confront issues of privilege, racism, and classism that divide us, and to hear the call to God’s beloved community. Since last Sunday was a holiday, the Encounter@Edgehill will meet this Sunday, January 8th.
Everyone is welcome to attend one or both of our Encounter services. For more information on either of our Encounter Ministries, you may contact Rick Quinn at firstname.lastname@example.org.
REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering. We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm. This short time of worship includes prayers, hymns, a message and Holy Communion. Everyone is invited to attend.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY Our Adult Bible Study meets at 6pm in the Pastor’s office. On January 11 we will resume our study of Christianity, Cults and Religions by Paul Carden. Everyone is welcome to join us!
LIFE GROUPS We invite and encourage everyone to be a part of a Life Group! Contact Rick Quinn (email@example.com) for more information on our McKendree Life Groups!
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The UMW will meet Saturday, January 14th, at 10am in the Archives Room (Room 209). We will plan and schedule meetings and other important dates for the year and set our 2017 budget. We will start the new year off with an opening devotion and prayer and then do the scheduling. Please attend and offer your suggestions for programs, projects, etc. We need everyone’s ideas and prayers!
BAPTISMS If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at 615-271-2600 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
CHURCH/SCHOOL PARTNERS IN MISSION McKendree UMC is looking to expand its partnership with Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School in North Nashville. Buena Vista is currently looking to recruit volunteers to serve as Reading Clinic aides; PENCIL Foundation will be providing training for this ministry. Buena Vista is a priority school and serves a student body that is 100% economically disadvantaged. The school is located at 1531 9th Avenue North, Nashville, 37208. Volunteers are needed Monday–Thursday for 30 minute sessions, at any time from 8:15 -2:00 (the last session would be 2:00 – 2:30). There will be a training session the morning of January 18th. Please contact Rick Quinn at email@example.com for more information.
DECEMBER MISSION FOCUS: Christmas Eve Meal McKendree Church hosted a Christmas Eve meal and celebration Saturday, December 24, for the displaced in our downtown community. It seemed like chaos, but dozens of church and community volunteers, along with some key directors (Penny Hooper and Cindy Ligon) actually had everything organized and under control. We prepared for 300 guests – with a meal of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. There was plenty of food and everyone enjoyed the delicious meal! A huge “THANK YOU” to all the people who worked ahead of time, behind the scenes, during the meal, after the meal – organizing, getting donations, prepping, setting up, cooking, playing music, greeting, serving and cleaning. The meal was a huge success, and couldn’t have been done without everyone’s input. God bless you all!
CHRISTMAS EVE GIFT BAGS Along with our Christmas Eve Meal for the displaced community, we also gave each guest a gift bag with warm socks, gloves, hats, hand-warmers and other items for survival on the street. Our guests appreciated that we not only fed them, but had gifts for them! Thank you to everyone who donated gift items for our bags and to the volunteers that assembled the bags!
PRAYER CONCERNS As part of our commitment to caring for all children, we pray for the following schools: Rose Park Math & Science Middle Magnet, Jones Paideria Elementary, Buena Vista Elementary, John Early Middle Magnet, and Hull Jackson Elementary.
