Matthew 2:13-15; 19-23 Common English Bible
Have you ever felt fearful enough to go in a totally different direction? What caused you to go then and why? How did you know to go down that path?
Paths are designed for humanity to go in a certain direction, the direction of righteousness. It takes intentional humility and faithful obedience to go in a different direction, especially when God directs the path. Each God-given path is based on a promise. When we draw a circle around that promise, it brings clarity when we come to that crossroad in life.
Joseph is in the midst of a “crossroad moment” and he gets direction from the angel in a dream. Sometimes God causes us to take a nap so that God can instruct and redirect our path. However no path is revealed unless there is fervent and frequent prayer. Circling God’s promises involves prayer. So when God reveals the path…
it is followed by instruction!
When the magi had departed, an angel from the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod will soon search for the child in order to kill him.” Matthew 2:13
it is often inconvenient!
Joseph got up and, during the night, took the child and his mother to Egypt. He stayed there until Herod died. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I have called my son out of Egypt. Matthew 2:14-15
it will eventually bring peace and purpose!
He settled in a city called Nazareth so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: He will be called a Nazarene. Matthew 2:23
