McKENDREE MINISTRIES!
SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES are regularly at 9am and 11am. (On Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.) Our August Sermon Series is “Women of the Faith!” We are exploring how God called the women throughout the Bible to participate in His(tory). Women are called to be in ministry and the negative labels, despairing comments, and glass-ceiling limitations are deeply rooted in Patriarchal structures and patterns. How do we join with God to reimagine women in ministry for a hopeful and redemptive future? Join us for a time to hear how God liberates the Women of the Faith, then and now!
BAPTISMS If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at 615-271-2600 or mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.
REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering. We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm. Our worship includes prayers, music, a message and Holy Communion. Everyone is invited to attend.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER Remember that we as a church are praying the Lord’s Prayer every day at Noon. Wherever you are at noon, we invite you to join us in prayer.

McKENDREE GROUP INFORMATION!
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Our UMW will meet this Saturday, August 19 at 10am in the Archives Room. After a brief meeting, we will assemble disaster health kits that go to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Extra hands are needed and welcomed. We need donations of combs (not pocket combs or rattail combs), hand towels and nail clippers. All ladies are welcome to join us!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY Our Wednesday night adult Bible study group has started an in-depth study of the book of Philippians. Even though he was in prison, Paul writes much about rejoicing! Our scripture study for August 23 will be Philippians 1:12-26, The Important Thing. We welcome everyone to join with us for this study series. We meet each Wednesday at 6pm in Pastor Stephen’s office. Please contact Ruth Baggett if you have any questions – 615-271-2600 or mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.
LIFE GROUPS! Many of our McKendree Life Groups took a break during the summer. Some groups have already resumed, and others will resume the first week of September. We encourage everyone to belong to a Life Group – this is a small group that joins for study, encouragement, accountability, mission and fellowship. We will have a list of groups and sign-up sheets available Sunday. More information will be in next week’s newsletter.

SERVICE TO OTHERS!
VOLUNTEERING AT BUENA VISTA ELEMENTARY/MENTORS AND READING CLINIC
McKendree UMC is working to deepen and broaden a partnership with Buena Vista Enhanced Option Elementary School located in North Nashville on 1531 9th Avenue North. Buena Vista Elementary is designated a priority school in the state of Tennessee which means that it falls in the bottom 5% of schools throughout the state in student performance. Nearly 100% of the student body are from families who live at or below the poverty line with an average family income for the school of $9,000/year. Only 20% of the student body is reading at grade level and there is a 40% mobility rate (4 out of 10 students who start the year won’t finish the complete school year at Buena Vista) because the school serves two homeless shelters. There is a great need for mentors and reading clinic volunteers who could dedicate an hour a week to making a difference in the lives of some amazing children. Please consider volunteering in this great ministry! For more information, please contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.
CHRISTMAS SHOE BOXES/Missions Focus for September The Evangelism/Missions/ Social Justice team is making a change in our Shoe Box ministry. This year instead of sending our shoe boxes through Samaritan’s Purse, our Christmas Shoe boxes will go through UMCOR to Latin America to the missionaries and mission workers who serve in those countries. This will be our September Mission Focus as the boxes need to be completed by September 24th.
The items to send are similar to those we have been providing in the shoe boxes – school supplies, personal hygiene items and toys. UMCOR will provide the boxes; it helps to fit their shipping crates if all the boxes are the same size. The boxes and the information on content and shipping instructions will be available by Sunday, August 27. We just want to give you heads up so you can plan to participate in this ministry. — E/M/SJ Team
LEARN HOW TO SAVE A LIFE! Kathy Von Nieda would like to offer CPR classes here at the church. The schedule will be determined according to the number of people we have, and what days/times will work best. The cost of the class will be $30 per person, to cover the cost of materials. Please contact Ruth Baggett (615-271-2600, mckendreeinfo@gmail.com) if you’re interested.
