McKendree Life Groups — Join Us!

At McKendree United Methodist Church you will hear a lot about life groups.  What are they and why do we feel like they are so important?

Simply put, a life group is a small group (ideally 8-10 people) committed to meet together for a season (a minimum of twice a month for a semester) for the primary purpose of walking together as a group on the Christian journey to grow deeper in our faith in Christ and to engage in missional activity as a group.  We believe that life groups are an essential means for making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world simply because life groups are places where people learn how to interpret their entire lives through the lens of the gospel, build a vocabulary for giving voice to their experience of God, and grow in faith in Christ.

We currently have life groups meeting in MetroCenter, North Nashville, 12th South, Lebanon, and Midtown among other locations.  We will soon begin a new life Group in East Nashville!  We hope to launch at least 2-3 new life groups this year.  If you have an interest in knowing more about our Life Groups, joining a Life Group or helping to launch or host one, please contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

A Balanced Life Brings a Blessed Life!”

Greetings Holy, Healthy and Happy People of God,

As I write this eNote to our faithful and devoted community of radical and responsible followers of Jesus Christ, I am thrilled that after years of prayers, God has opened a gracious door for us to start a Life Group. This new Life Group will allow us to continue to make disciples beyond our walls.  We celebrate the movement of the Holy Spirit.

Barbara June, a resident of The Cumberland on Church, has offered to host this new Life Group.  McKendree is located in a climate where 75% of the downtown residents say they will never walk through the doors of a church.  Can you imagine what it will look like to live out of Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” in today’s reality?

God has opened a door where we can share the goods news of the gospel, right next door where people are looking to belong in community.  There are over 20 stories and probably over 500 people, right next door.  So we will offer radical hospitality and an entry into a disciplined life that follows Jesus.

One of our Life Groups just finished an exciting journey of spiritual practices and spiritual renewal.  The study was A Spiritual Formation Workbook published by Renovare (from the Latin word meaning “to renew”).  What impressed me most about the study involved the three important ingredients: 1) balance which we all need, 2) knowledge that helps us practice the spiritual disciplines, 3) mutual encouragement and accountability that we gain from each other.  The secret to this study is joining forces with others who have a similar mission.

Jesus tells the disciples in his last moments, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (all people), baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20  It is one thing to gather people together for fellowship, which has value, but it is another to live life together where there is balance, knowledge, and encouragement and accountability.

Hear the W.O.W., the Words of Wisdom,
“A balanced life brings a blessed life!”

Remember to pray The Lord’s Prayer every day at 12 Noon!

Also — We are sponsoring a United Methodist Pastor in Rwanda for a year.  Currently the United Methodist pastors do not receive an adequate salary to support their families.  It takes only $34 a month to support a pastor in Rwanda.  Please bring your loose change for a special offering for our Rwanda Remains Faithful project.  Your loose change can bring about change for these faithful men of God!

Be Shalom,
Pastor Stephen

LIFE GROUP EMPHASIS THIS SUNDAY

During this Fifth Sunday Service we will spend a few moments focusing on McKendree’s ministry of life groups-sharing information about the ministry, hopes for expansion, and offer an invitation to consider joining an existing group or helping to launch and/or host new groups.

We hope to launch at least 2-3 new life groups this year and are exploring the possibility of a virtual/online life group where a small group could connect electronically even if participants were not in the same area.

If you have an interest in knowing more, joining a Life Group or helping to launch or host one, I hope you’ll be able to join us this Sunday.

McKENDREE MINISTRIES!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (On September 30 we will have one combined worship service at 10am.)  Our September Sermon Series is ”Trust Without Borders!”  Relationships should be deeply rooted in trust.  This series will remind us of our response when Jesus is present and calling.  Jesus calls people to follow and trust him without creating and worrying about borders.  We live in a time when borders are everywhere in our lives.  Borders show up in the spiritual, physical, mental, and economic aspects of our lives.  Borders prevent us from experiencing the fullness of God in our lives.  Borders can be used for good and/or for division.  When Jesus calls us, it typically involves us moving beyond self-constructed or self-imposed borders.  It takes trust to follow Jesus and keep following him regardless of the borders.

BAPTISM  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.

McKENDREE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT  We will be offering two Leadership sessions for our ministry teams on Saturday, September 8th, at 10am or Saturday, September 15th at 10am.  We will be working with our Ministry Teams on our Ministry Action Plans and Budget Planning.  These two documents are needed for our Finance/Trustee Budget Submissions in October and for Annual Charge Conference on November 1.  Team leaders, please formulate your teams and have at least three of your team members to one of these sessions with you.

McKENDREE MINISTRIES!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (On Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.)  Our November Sermon Series is “The Table of Thanks and Giving!”  Thankfulness is a major theme in the Bible.  From the birth of a baby to the deliverance of a people, God’s people have so much to be thankful for in everyday life.  Giving is another theme in the Bible most modeled when God sent Jesus into the world to redeem and reconcile us.  Both thanks and giving are most prominent promises around the table with Jesus and others.

Jesus offers us some lessons when he invites people to the table of thanksgiving.  Jesus understood a simple invitation to come and then engage at the table so that lives can be examined, restored, and ultimately transformed into His image and likeness.  How much time do we spend at the table with Jesus and others?  Jesus invites us and others to the table of thanksgiving.

BAPTISM  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.

ENCOUNTER MINISTRY  We invite you to join us Sunday afternoons at 12:30pm at the offices of the United Methodist Publishing House on 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd, Nashville, TN.  The Encounter is an alternative service for those who feel “church” is not for them.  We are disrupting the passive model of Christian gathering and building bridges of hope around tables where we encounter God in and with our neighbor and engage the neighborhood.  For more information on our Encounter Ministry, you may contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering.  We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm.  Our worship includes prayers, music, a message and Holy Communion.  Everyone is invited to attend.

LIFE GROUPS!  We encourage everyone to belong to a Life Group – a small group that joins for study, encouragement, accountability, mission and fellowship.  McKendree Church has a number of Life Groups; a list is on the wall just inside the garage entrance.  For more information, please contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.
