Celebrating 231 Years of Ministry!

Speaker: Rev. Junius Dotson
Special Music with The Agape Singers
Theme: “See All the People!”

CHURCH ANNIVERSARY SILENT AUCTION  It’s Silent Auction time at McKendree!!  We are asking that all McKendree groups, including Life Groups, Sunday School classes, Ministry Teams, etc., put together a basket for the Silent Auction on October 28, 2018.

We are also looking for restaurant gift certificates, sports tickets, gift cards, and other items that can be auctioned off alone.  If you have a connection for one of those items or something you personally want to donate, please let the church staff know.

If you need ideas, receipts, or request letters, please contact Annaleigh Christie at annaleighchristie@yahoo.com.  All Baskets and items should be turned in by October 24th.

CHARGE CONFERENCE  Our Annual Charge Conference for this year will be Thursday, November 1 at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall.  Charge Conference is a meeting with our District Superintendent (Rev. Ken Murray) and is a time where the Leadership Council presents our church budget, our Staff Parish Team recommends candidates for the ministry and our Ministry Teams give reports on what we’ve done this year, and plans for next year.  It’s a time to review where we are and plan ahead for the future.  Everyone is invited to attend.

LIFE GROUP EMPHASIS THIS SUNDAY

During this Fifth Sunday Service we will spend a few moments focusing on McKendree’s ministry of life groups-sharing information about the ministry, hopes for expansion, and offer an invitation to consider joining an existing group or helping to launch and/or host new groups.

At McKendree United Methodist Church you will hear a lot about life groups.  What are they and why do we feel like they are so important?

Simply put, a life group is a small group (ideally 8-10 people) committed to meet together for a season (a minimum of twice a month for a semester)  for the primary purpose of walking together as a group on the Christian journey to grow deeper in our faith in Christ and to engage in missional activity as a group.  We believe that life groups are an essential means for making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world simply because life groups are places where people learn how to interpret their entire lives through the lens of the gospel, build a vocabulary for giving voice to their experience of God, and grow in faith in Christ.

We currently have life groups meeting in MetroCenter, North Nashville, 12th South, Lebanon, and Midtown among other locations.  We hope to launch at least 2-3 new life groups this year and are exploring the possibility of a virtual/online life group where a small group could connect electronically even if participants were not in the same area.

If you have an interest in knowing more, joining a Life Group or helping to launch or host one, I hope you’ll be able to join us this Sunday.
— Rick Quinn

McKENDREE MINISTRIES!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (On Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.)  Our June/July sermon series is “Talking with God!”  This series explores what to say when you don’t know how to pray.  Even more the series gives us the understanding and confidence to pray with ease and expectation.  Often we think about prayer as a well-crafted experience and we need just the right language for God to hear us.  What if prayer were just the opposite?  We are using the Lord’s Prayer as a guide for this two-month series.

BAPTISM  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600.

ENCOUNTER MINISTRY    Our Encounter Ministry is an alternative service for those who feel “church” is not for them.  We meet at 12:30pm at the offices of the United Methodist Publish House, at 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.  We are meeting (for the summer) on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month.  We invite you to join us and bring a neighbor, family or friends!  For more information on our Encounter Ministry, you may contact Rick Quinn at mckendreerick@gmail.com.

REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering.  We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00-12:30pm.  Our worship includes prayers, music, a message and Holy Communion.  Everyone is invited to attend.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE!

CLOTHING CLOSET ORGANIZATION  Thank you to everyone who has helped sort and organize clothing in our clothes closet!  Your help has been greatly appreciated!

We are in need of two kinds of help —

1)  Sorting and organizing.  Donations come in every week, and need to be sorted and put on the shelves.  This work is best done when the closet is NOT open for people to come in.  This can be done morning or afternoon, Monday-Friday, for 1-2 hours.  You can come on a one-time basis, or come once a week, twice a month, whatever fits with your own personal schedule.

2)  Greeters for the closet during open hours.  Duties include smiling, greeting our guests, helping them find clothing, and giving basic information about McKendree Church.  Someone from the church staff is always available to help.  Greeters are needed for 2-hour time periods, morning or afternoon, Monday-Friday.  It is helpful to have greeters on a consistent schedule — for example, every Tuesday morning, or Wednesday afternoons twice a month — whatever would work for your personal schedule.

If you can assist with either of these tasks, please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office (mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600).  I will be happy to show you the closet and talk with you about our ministry opportunity here.

McKENDREE MINISTRIES!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES  are regularly at 9am and 11am.  (Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am.)  Our April Sermon Series is called “Be Anxious for Nothing: Stay Calm!”  Most of us at some point in our lives become overly anxious.  Anxiety takes up residence in our hearts.  Anxiety can be deadly if it goes unchecked.  As Americans the cost of anxiety is over 300 billion dollars in medical bills and lost productivity in the workplace annually.  Paul, in his letter to the church in Philippi, offers not only good advice, but also a way to overcome anxiety by staying calm.  Life is worth living without anxiety and is possible because Jesus Christ is no longer in the tomb!

BAPTISM  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at mckendreeinfo@gmail.com.

ENCOUNTER MINISTRY  We invite you to join us Sunday afternoons at 12:30pm at the offices of the United Methodist Publishing House at 2222 Rosa L. Parks Blvd, for our Encounter service.  The Encounter is an alternative service for those who feel “church” is not for them.  We are disrupting the passive model of Christian gathering and building bridges of hope around tables where we encounter God in and with our neighbor and engage the neighborhood.

McKENDREE GROUP MINISTRIES!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY  We are in a study of the book The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis.  This is a classic work of religious satire, written from the perspective of Screwtape, one of Satan’s highly placed assistants, as he mentors his nephew Wormwood in the ways of demonhood.  We are finding this book to be humorous and enlightening and it pushes us to think from a different perspective.  On May 2, we will discuss Letters 17-18, on Gluttony and Love and Marriage.  We welcome everyone to join with us for this study series.  We meet each Wednesday at 6pm in Pastor Stephen’s office.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE!

CLOTHING CLOSET ORGANIZATION  We are in great need of person to help organize clothing in our church clothes closet.  We have been gifted with a large donation of clothes, but they must be sorted and organized before we can re-open the closet to the public.  If you can assist for a morning, an afternoon, a couple of hours, whatever fits your schedule – we truly need help!  Please contact Ruth Baggett in the church office if you can donate some time (mckendreeinfo@gmail.com or 615-271-2600).

CREATION CARE MINISTRY  On Saturday, May 12th, McKendree Church will co-sponsor in Creation Care Recycling Day at West End UMC, from 9am-12pm.  This will be an opportunity for:
Document shredding – bring paper and photos in an untied garbage bag or open box
Electronic recycling – computers, monitors, DVD players, electronics, printers, televisions and more.  There is a $10 charge for CRT monitors and a $25 charge for all televisions.
Batteries – dry-cell batteries, disposable and rechargeable and others
Medications – dispose of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, pills, liquids, inhalers
Donations for Goodwill – clothing, household items, furniture, books, working appliances

As a co-sponsor, we need volunteers to help at West End UMC on May 12.  Volunteers will direct cars through the parking lot and help unload items from people’s cars/trucks.  We need to fill 3 slots from 8:30-12:15.  You can volunteer for all 4 hours, or for 2-hour shifts (8:30-10:40/10:30-12:15).  If you have questions or can help on May 12, please contact Karasheila Jackson at krochellenoskcaj@gmail.com.  Thanks for your help!

DOWNTOWN HOME TOUR   Thanks to Willodene Brodrick, Karasheila Jackson and Debbie McCormick who came out last Sunday and gave out cookies and information flyers to folks in our downtown neighborhood.  It was a cold day (for April) but we gave out two trays of cookies and got to meet some really nice people.  Thanks also to everyone who brought cookies!  They were a blessing!

BUENA VISTA ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY  The 3rd/4th grade students at our Pencil Partner, Buena Vista Elementary will take the state assessment, TNReady, in just a few short weeks.  Students will sit for a portion of the exam each day – each section lasting anywhere from 45-80 minutes.  We are looking for volunteers who are interested/willing to assist as test proctors in our four 3rd/4th grade classrooms.  In this role, you’ll be “teacher back-up” when it comes to handing out materials, ensuring that students have what they need during the test, watching the classroom in case the teacher has to step out with a student, etc.  There are two dates still in need of a volunteer —  April 25 and 27.
